Third Grade

Third grade....a giant step
In reading, students work on identifying the main idea in a story. Understanding story details and story events in sequence is a needed critical skill. Third grade students begin to organize information for reports and speeches, and begin to use a variety of reference material. Students use language, grammar skills, and writing skills to express ideas and events. Listening, viewing, and speaking skills are also refined in third grade.

In math, students learn to compute and solve problems. In third grade, students are exposed to measurement, geometry, algebraic thinking, and data analysis.

In science, students begin to investigate their world by becoming familiar with and using the steps of the scientific method, exploring basic matter, energy, force and motion, the earth, and their environment.

Ask your child's teacher to explain what will be taught in the third grade, or visit the Dept. of Educations web site for other information.
