Fourth Grade

In reading, the emphasis moves from learning to read to reading to learn. To accomplish this, students work on identifying the main idea of a story. Story details and story events in sequence need to be understood. Students learn various strategies to help them understand reading content. Students begin to use a variety of reference materials to help in research projects. In addition to reading, students use language, grammar skills, and writing skills to express ideas and explain events. Listening, viewing, and speaking continue to be developed in the fourth grade.

In math, students develop understanding of the different ways numbers are represented and their comparative sizes. Students will develop understanding and fluency of the operations involving decimal numbers while they solve problems. Fourth grade students also investigate measurement, geometry, algebraic thinking, and data analysis.

In science, students plan and conduct a basic experiment using the scientific method. They also begin to develop an understanding of scientific concepts and processes involving matter, energy, the Earth, force and motion, the environment, and processes of life.
