Fifth Grade

In reading, the emphasis on reading to learn continues. Identifying the main idea of a story, story details, and events in sequence, become more challenging. Fifth grade students sharpen their use of reference materials. Use of language, grammar skills, writing skills, listening, viewing, and speaking skills are all further developed in fifth grade.

In math, more complex concepts of measurement, geometry, algebraic thinking, and data analysis are stressed. Students develop an understanding and fluency involving fractions, and estimation, to solve real world problems.

In science, students use the scientific method to investigate controls and variables in their experiments. Students develop data collection and analysis techniques, and acquire a basic understanding of physical and biological changes.

Ask your child's teacher to explain what will be taught in the fifth grade, or visit the Dept. of Educations web site for other information.
