Strategies

Oral Reading Fluency is a skill that needs consistent practice. We so often ask our students to read daily at home as well as in class...and this practice is most often silent. However, in order to develop a skill, practice on that specific skill is necessary for growth to occur. It is highly important that our students do some form of oral reading on a daily basis. They also need continued modeling of fluent oral reading skills. This can be modeled by a teacher or a fluent student.

Some quick and easy ways to incorporate oral reading practice on a daily basis are:

choral reading from a chart

echo reading

poetry readings

readers theater

buddy reading

Please encourage your students to read aloud to someone at home each night.

read your AR book aloud to a parent or sibling

read a recipe before preparing a dish

read a cereal box at breakfast

read a newspaper article aloud

read a chapter with an adult while taking turns reading every other page aloud

read a Dr. Seuss book aloud

read the billboards or road signs aloud

Reading aloud is a skill we need to work to develop and besides

IT IS FUN!

Happy Reading!
